Art Snak: Writing as Art Making

Handwriting as a mark, rhythm and texture.

In this Art Snak, we’ll explore handwriting and asemic marks as visual material rather than readable text. Using your art journal as a playground, you’ll layer, obscure, repeat, and respond to written marks the same way you might with paint or collage.

This is not a writing class. Instead, handwriting becomes part of the surface—introducing personal, intuitive, and expressive marks into your work. Meaning is optional. Presence, rhythm, and texture are the focus.

If you’re not already familiar with asemic writing, you might be interested in this short article on the topic.

As with all Art Snaks, you’ll work in your art journal in a stress-free, playful way—designed to keep your creative practice moving without pressure or expectations.

What’s Inside

Before You Begin
I’ll share examples of how I use handwriting and text-like marks in my own journals to set the tone and spark ideas.

Part I – Writing as a Starting Point
Reconnect with your handwriting in a cathartic, intuitive exercise that becomes the foundation for collage and painting.

Part II – Writing on Black
Begin with a dark ground, write using asemic marks, and build layers of collage and response.

Part III – Creating Collage Scraps
Develop written collage papers and fragments to use later in your work.

Part IV – Revealing Writing
Use gesso and paint as resist to partially obscure and reveal written marks, allowing text to emerge quietly through layers.
